He was born in Mexico City in 1956 and died on May 23, 2023 in Mérida Yucatán. He studied Musical Composition with Mario Lavista in Mexico City before moving to the United States in 1980 and later to Great Britain. There he attended the Royal College of Music and City University in London, studying with John Lambert. From that time, his first electroacoustic works emerged, as is the case of the now classic Temazcal (1984). His works frequently incorporate sound elements from other music, as in Mambo a la Braque (1991), in which Álvarez creates an electro-acoustic collage from musical segments taken from Black Horse by the composer Dámaso Pérez Prado. Papalotl (1987) is a piece that earned him the ICEM Prize in France, as well as awards and distinctions at the Bourges International Festival. In Britain, he received the Mendelssohn Scholarship, the Lionel Robbins Prize, and the coveted Gemini Scholarship. For 25 years he lived in London, England, where he served as a professor at the most important institutions. He was a founding member and president of Sonic Arts Network and artistic director of the Society for the Promotion of New Music.

In 1993, Álvarez He was recognized as an Artistic Creator by the National Fund for Culture and the Arts in Mexico. At the end of 2004 he returned to Mexico to promote and integrate the educational project of the Yucatán Higher School of Arts, where he served as director of the Musical Arts degree. His music has been performed by distinguished soloists and groups around the world such as, among others, Lontano, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, Ictus, Music Projects London, L'Itinéraire, the London Sinfonietta and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He entered the Academia de Artes the February 4 2014.
