Founding Academician

National Award for Technology and Design (1978)

He was born on January 21, 1905 in Irapuato, Guanajuato, and died on June 11, 1987 in Mexico City. He completed his professional studies at the National School of Architecture, UNAM, where he graduated as an architect in 1928. Later he was a professor of Composition, between 1934 and 1950, and Director, from 1944 to 1949, of that same institution. During his professional career he developed various projects with Marcial Gutiérrez Camarena and other architects such as José Villagrán and, in particular, Mario Pani. His work is characterized by the fusion of his architectural concepts and his realizations, also developing an important written contribution through publications such as Man and architecture (1984). The example of the Mercado de la Merced (1957) shows the solution of a specific problem within the field of supply, without abandoning its social commitment or giving up its aesthetic ideals.

An important part of his work is in the development of a significant number of hospitals in Mexico City, Villahermosa, Monterrey, Tampico, and Ciudad Obregón. He also carried out a good number of projects together with Mario Pani. Without a doubt one of the most relevant was the development of the Master Plan for the University City, UNAM, between 1950 and 1952, when they also planned the Rectory Tower. Subsequently, a series of projects appeared in Acapulco, among which the airport, the bullring, and some hotels such as the Fishing Club and various residences stand out. The Mexican government awarded him the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in 1978.

Founding Academician since April 30, 1968.
